How do you show leadership when you cannot see your friends? How do you collaborate in complete darkness? What can the dark teach you about your day-to-day life? Students will learn and hone a range of skills as they find out the answer to these questions, and more.

Presented in partnership with Guide Dogs Australia, Dialogue in the Dark™ is a global social enterprise with a mission to educate the community and raise awareness for diversity, whilst providing employment opportunities for people with low vision or blindness. Students and teachers have the opportunity to explore a simulated tour of Melbourne set in complete darkness, guided by a skilled facilitator with blindness or low vision.

Dialogue in the Dark is a potent and transformative learning experience that is imaginative, educational and entertaining. The sensory tour links to the learning objectives and outcomes of the Victorian Curriculum Levels 3-10. It challenges students to evaluate and understand their thinking, emotions, responses and actions when vision is removed and communication skills come to the fore.

Learning outcomes:

  • empathy – understanding how people with low vision or blindness interact and experience day-to-day life
  • non-visual communication – including speaking and listening skills
  • confidence – through overcoming fears
  • self-awareness – of who they are.

Tour duration:

Each tour takes approximately 1 hour to complete. Students are engaged with sensory activities as they await their time to enter the experience.

Maximum capacity per tour:

Seven. Larger groups can be divided into smaller groups of 7.
However, please note: each group must be supervised by teaching staff provided by the school.
