Student Poetry Competition 2026 Finalist: Reality Escaper

Reality Escaper

by Sheryl Chan, Donvale Christian College
Years 3 – 4 Performance Poetry Finalist

Reading is a joy

Phenomenal words of power that you can enjoy

A motivation for adventure

An invitation to venture

Crooked twisted witches, brave daring heroes

Dash through a field of swaying Primrose

This world of dreams and imagination

Can you feel the sensation?

It’s like your brain in animation

Glowing so brightly the illustration

I just have appreciation

Nothing else just plain admiration

Stop, Pause, Imagine

Seeing Percy in Poseidon cabin

To me reading is a never-ending form of  entertainment

It wows me with amazement

Think about the dark trippy stone road alleyway you ran through with Alvar

When Voldemort cursed Harry Potter with that frightening scar

Every story is a unique masterpiece that you can recall

You were there for it all

Because books are wings that slowly flutters you from reality into a world unknown

In their own words

How did writing this poem make you feel?

I felt really determined on finishing writing the poem. It took ages but I never gave up and finished that long poem. It wasn’t too hard but the filming was brutal!

Which single line in your poem are you the absolute proudest of?

I am most proud of ‘Darkness awaits inside the pear’, because it is the first line and it is quite catchy!

Describe your poem in three words

Suspenseful, dramatic, heroic.

Where is your absolute favourite place to sit when you are brainstorming ideas?

I brainstormed my ideas in the classroom at school, but usually I like to sit by myself, or even just in a quiet space letting my imagination and thoughts wander.

What skills do you think you strengthened through writing this poem?

I’m pretty sure my mind got more creative with rhyming the words.

Why do you think people write poetry?

I think people write poetry to express themselves in a creative way. Also it’s a fun but challenging experience.
