Squirrel Monkey
by Joanna Joy Kyriakou, Donvale Christian College
Years 3 – 4 Performance Poetry Finalist
Cute and adorable, cheeky and smart.
It’s like a brown and white trapeze artist gracefully swinging from tree to tree.
Deceiving everyone with its cuteness it comes to steal fruit instead.
It is a human with a tail and a fluffy brown and white body!
They dash around as fast as lightning across the jungle vines.
Scouring away from predators along the thick tree branches.
Talking away to their friends in gibberish, they are definitely chatterboxes.
Snuggles with mama and playing with friends, they are the squirrel monkey.
How did writing this poem make you feel?
It made me feel happy and joyful as squirrel monkeys are one of my favourite animals.
Which single line in your poem are you the absolute proudest of?
‘Snuggles with mama and playing with friends. They are the squirrel monkey.’
Describe your poem in three words
Cute, catchy and a bit of fun.
Where is your absolute favourite place to sit when you are brainstorming ideas?
My bed and the shower.
What skills do you think you strengthened through writing this poem?
I learnt that poems have different styles and they do not necessarily have to rhyme. It made me to learn different voices, hand gestures and tones to make it more interesting.
Why do you think people write poetry?
To express how they are feeling, to share their love of poetry with others and something people do for fun. Every poem can make a difference.
