The Secrets of the Pomegranate
by Olivia Krawczyk, Tintern Grammar
Years 5 – 6 Written Poetry Finalist
I sit quietly beneath the leaves,
Wearing my small crown,
Waiting for someone to find me
And discover what lies beneath my skin.
From the outside,
I look like a worthless fruit,
Or perhaps even a little strange.
But somehow,
There is a whole entire universe
Trapped and bottled up inside of me,
Waiting to be burst open,
And be seen.
When my skin breaks,
Hundreds of ruby-red seeds are discovered,
Pressed tightly together
Like they were protecting each other
From harm.
Each seed glistens in the sunlight,
Delicate and bright,
Like tiny shards of glass.
Not everything is precious needs to be announced to the world
Just the colour, sweetness and life
Perhaps this is what makes me different and special,
From other fruits.
I don’t reveal my secrets at once,
I make you wonder about what
I could be…
How did writing this poem make you feel?
I was thinking about how special things can be on the inside then on the outside and how when you see a bit more than what you can see on the outside it can seem more valuable and special.
Which single line in your poem are you the absolute proudest of?
‘Not everything precious need to be announced to the world’ is my favourite line in my poem because it tells us that precious or special things don’t have to be stated they can just be meaningful to you.
Describe your poem in three words
Precious, different, discover.
Where is your absolute favourite place to sit when you are brainstorming ideas?
My desk at home, because it has everything in need on it to motivate me and it also makes me focus better.
Why do you think people write poetry?
People write poetry to express their opinions, feelings and thoughts about a certain topic, and can make people think about your perspective on things.
