Student Poetry Competition 2026 Finalist: Tomatoes DON’T go in the Veggie Aisle

Tomatoes DON’T go in the Veggie Aisle

by Alisha Bhasin, Korowa Anglican Girls’ School
Years 5 – 6 Written Poetry Finalist

I sit in aisle six, with all the vegetables,

I feel so out of place here,

All my friends are in aisle three,

The friendly strawberries, the cheeky oranges, the bubbly mandarins!

They are all in the fruit section.

Here, there are haughty carrots, hostile potatoes and of course, the bullying broccoli…

I’m not the only misfit though, Cucumber is here,

She has seeds, I have seeds, we’re both fruits,

Yet here we are, in the veggie aisle.

I see a random lady ask the shopkeeper for tomatoes,

“I went to the fruit aisle and they weren’t there!”

“Sorry Ma’am the tomatoes are in the veggie aisle.”

“Why?!? They’re not even veggies!”

My heart warms when she says that,

Finally! Someone who gets me!

The lady rolls her eyes and stomps over to me,

She picks me up and takes me home.

In the car a warm wave of gratitude wafts towards me,

At home I sit in the fruit bowl with the friendly strawberries, the cheeky oranges and the bubbly mandarins,

There are no haughty carrots, hostile potatoes, or even bullying broccoli!

They all sit in the freezing fridge- As they should be!- HA! HA!
