Student Poetry Competition 2026 Finalist: Sour but Sweet

Sour but Sweet

by Sophie Crowther, Hillcrest Christian College
Years 5 – 6 Ekphrastic Poetry Finalist

‘Fruit and a Jug on a Table’ by Paul Cézanne (c. 1890)

On the edge of a bowl,

lies a lonely lemon,

pushed away, yellow soul.

An outcast, a freak,

sour not sweet.

People would stare,

people would hate.

But on the inside,

it was not her state.

Years passed,

she was still alone,

until a friendly mango,

came rolling along.

Today best buds, amigos,

two peas in a pod.

An inseparable due.

In their own words

Listen to Sophie recite her poem:

How did writing this poem make you feel?

Writing this poem made me feel like I could show me without it seeming like it was about me. I also felt proud of how much I had achieved.

Which single line in your poem are you the absolute proudest of?

The line I am most proud of is ‘Today best buds, amigos, two peas in a pod’ because it represents the day I found my amigos and best buds, that memory is so special and to represent it in a poem means a lot to me.

Describe your poem in three words

Misunderstood, belonging, friendship.

Where is your absolute favourite place to sit when you are brainstorming ideas?

My absolute favourite place to sit and brainstorm ideas are in my bedroom looking out into my backyard soaking in all the nature around me, or with my friends talking and bouncing off each other’s ideas because I can say something and it can trigger someone else’s train of thought which makes me so happy.

What skills do you think you strengthened through writing this poem?

I think I strengthened my perspective skills because this poem is about me and to see that it is about me you need a different perspective.

Why do you think people write poetry?

I think people write poetry because it is a fun way to express their emotions and feelings without saying what they feel.
