Nothing But A Display

‘Still Life with Pear and Insects’ by Justus Juncker (1765)
Amber, rounded and sweet,
Tempting, near perfect,
Yet left to rot in an empty room.
It sits on a cracked dais,
A relief for a hot summer day,
Yet left to gather dust.
Nobles glance past this humble fruit,
Treasured yet nothing but a display,
As its glow fades and flesh decays.
Then a flutter of wings,
And the pear offers its nectar,
To this simple fly.
