Student Poetry Competition 2026 Finalist: Inside Counts More

Inside Counts More

If you were a fruit, how would you know who to be,

I’d pick one that feels like me,

Mangos feel sweet,

with their sweet messy inside,

And their soft like skin,

But it doesn’t feel like me,

Lemons,

Sharp and sour,

If you bite into one,

No one cannot help but make a face,

As the sour juice trickles down your chin,

I think you’d decide to stick with the juice on your fish and chips,

What if I picked an apple,

I think it’s sweet,

But it has a bruise.

“Cut it off,” you say,

And I agree.

We will pick it up and cut it off,

but now there is another mark

But nothings perfect,

You see,

Every time we pick a pea,

from our frozen pack in our freezer,

Why’d we pick that one?

Is it because it has no bruises,

On the outside it seems fine,

But inside, something is broken

We can’t see past the skin,

Until you peel it of,

So just so you know,

If you pick a pea,

Pick one that has a bruise,

Make it happy,

Make you happy,

But what about the odd strawberry,

That everyone leaves behind,

Just wait till we try,

Because we can’t see the inside,

It might be sweet or it could be mean,

What if I don’t and pick another instead?

What if that one was sweet?

It is the same as a pea

So, we have to try,

Even when its hard,

It’s just like life,

So next time you think about the outside,

It is the inside that counts,

So do not judge anyone as you walk down the street,

Because you won’t know until you try,

Fruit can be different,

Fruit can be imperfect,

And so can we.
