Snow on the Mountainside
by Coen Pang, Cobram Anglican Grammar School
Years 7 – 8 Written Poetry Finalist
Laying on the mountainside, still as a stone,
A blanket of clouds, sad and alone,
Occasionally the crystals are blown,
Down the slope into the unknown.
From up above, the heavens sleet,
Pouring down, reaching knee-deep,
Tucking plants to winter sleep,
Adding to a clear, white sheet.
It can also be, a place of laughter,
Skiing down, someone chasing after.
People cheering, ‘Faster, faster!’
Increasing the risk of a disaster.
Snow so high, reaching the moon,
Encasing the plants, in an icy cocoon,
Trees whispering, why so soon?
Frozen flora, the perils of June.
‘Whisper, whisper,’ the snowflakes flow,
Gently covering the mistletoe,
A monstrous heap of white play doh,
Sitting on a tall plateau.
“Flumpf!” goes the snow, dropping from the branches,
Glinting pointy jousting lances,
Creating tiny, avalanches,
Down the cake, the frosting dances.
