Collage of fruit

‘A Posh Picnic’ by Julia Abbey (2025)
A collage of fruits displays upon the mat,
Peaches, figs, watermelon both rich and fat.
Each one shines beneath the summer light,
Yet some seem dull compared to those so bright.
The peaches blush as if they seek applause,
While figs stay quiet, hiding all their flaws.
The watermelon waits, being bold with nothing to hide,
Though every fruit has sweetness tucked inside.
We rank their colours, shapes and every scar,
As though being different means we’re far.
But beauty changes through the judging eye,
And what seems small may be the greatest prize.
The picnic ends; the fruit is left behind,
For worth was never something we could find
By comparing ourselves against the rest,
A collage of fruits displays upon the mat.
