A Celebration of Words and Wonder

We are delighted to launch our 2026 Student Poetry Competition, inviting students from Foundation to Year 12 across all Victorian schools to take part.

This year’s theme, Fruit, invites young poets to explore language through colour, texture, taste, memory and imagination – one juicy word at a time!

The theme fruit is optional, poems written on other topics are also accepted and welcome.

Fruit, as a theme, was chosen because fruit is familiar and playful, yet rich with meaning. It can be sweet or sour, ordinary or exotic, or grown in a backyard. A single piece of fruit can hold stories of family, culture, seasons, change and growth. Through this theme, students are encouraged to look closely, think deeply, and express their unique perspectives through poetry.

The theme fruit offers versatility and accessibility. Younger students may enjoy describing the shape, colour or flavour of their favourite fruit, using rhyme, rhythm and sensory language. Older students might explore symbolism and metaphor; fruit as a sign of abundance, loss, temptation, patience or reward. From humorous poems about messy mangoes to reflective verses on apple trees and time, the possibilities are endless.

The competition is open to all Victorian school students, from Foundation through to Year 12. Entries will be judged within age-appropriate categories to ensure fairness and to celebrate the distinct voices and abilities at each stage of learning.

We welcome poems of all styles: rhyming or free verse, short or long, playful, thoughtful or bold.

Judges will be looking for originality, clear connection to the theme or topic, effective use of language, and a strong sense of voice. Most importantly, we want poems that show curiosity and creativity.

Poetry matters as it encourages students to slow down and pay attention; to words, to feelings and to the world around them. It builds confidence in self-expression and helps develop literacy skills in a creative and engaging way. This competition is not just about winning; it’s about celebrating student voices and the joy of writing.

Teachers and schools are warmly encouraged to support participation by incorporating the competition into classroom activities or literacy programs. Families can also play a role by encouraging students to draft, revise and share their work. A poem takes time to perfect.

We invite all young writers to take up the challenge: pick a fruit, take a bite of inspiration, and see where their words grow. Whether your poem is sweet, sharp, soft or surprising, we can’t wait to read it.

Let your imagination ripen and your words bear fruit.
