What the judges had to say
‘A smart, confident film that tackles racist stereotypes in an unsettling yet humourous way, The Banana in Me is filmed using an incredibly personal and claustrophobic approach, with surreal infomercials and film auditions punctuating the film’s weighty themes. The judges found this film to be both thematically and technically impressive.’
– Christine Evely (Head of Education) & Garry Westmore (Senior Producer School Programs), ACMI
Charli Curtis, Bentleigh Secondary College
What the judges had to say
‘As well as being beautifully shot, this personal and heartfelt short tackles self-esteem, image and identity issues using handwritten notes to symbolise the negative thoughts that can enter our minds, seemingly from nowhere. Though the film can’t possibly solve the issues many young people face, it posits that a shifting our way of thinking can be a step forward in beginning to see ourselves more positively. The judges were impressed by the novel yet considered way that the themes and issues were explored.’
