This year’s Student Film Festival brought together a wide range of ideas, styles and voices. Each category showcases how students are learning to tell stories through film in their own way.
Our senior filmmakers draw on experience and technical skill to tell stories with care and intention. Their films highlight individual perspective and the confidence in storytelling that comes with practice.
Selected films were shortlisted from more than 100 entries overall. Final judging was undertaken by education staff at ACMI.
Here we present all the winners and finalists in the Year 12 category:
‘This is a really thoughtful and well-structured documentary. We loved how you blended a personal story with a wider issue and connected your subject’s passion for textiles to fast fashion and sustainability. This was done in a way that felt genuine and engaging, which can be really difficult to do. The visuals, interview setup, and use of B-roll were all really strong, and your call to action was clear without feeling forced.’
Winner: Behind the Seams
Olivia Migliorini, Geelong Grammar School
‘We loved this fun and chaotic rom-com! It has great energy and strong comedic timing the whole way through. We felt you nailed the pacing and tone and included some really clever visual gags and editing that kept the story building in a really satisfying way. There's real attention to detail with the reappearing fly and shift in colour grading and this shows a great grasp of storytelling and visual comedy.’
Highly commended: Luckless
Soumil Aggarwal, Beaconhillls College
Finalist: Criminal In-Tent
Finalist: The Lines we Draw
Iyla Ly, Methodist Ladies’ College (MLC)
