Student Poetry Competition 2024: Foundation-Year 2 Winners

There was no shortage of talent among our youngest poets for this year’s Student Poetry Competition.

Congratulations to Djalu Stanley (Woodline Primary School), Hannah Wallis (Australian International Academy), Dinethi Rose Perera (Wesley College) and all of those who received honourable mentions in the Foundation-Year 2 category.

The competition attracted over 850 entries from students in Foundation to Year 12 across all school sectors in Victoria.

Written poetry winners
‘A striking image conveyed through the power of the young poet’s language.’
Changes
Djalu Stanley, Woodline Primary School

Grass changes colour.
The sun changes colour.
And just me,
I don’t change colour.

Djalu is a proud Wadawurrung boy writing on Wadawurrung Country.

‘Vivid and evocative language allowing the reader to be immersed in the young poet’s world.’
Eden Rock Pool
Hannah Wallis, Australian International Academy

The rocks were red, orange, yellow and white,
While the sun was shining very bright,
It was the Easter holidays,
And I could taste the salt from the crashing waves,
I was very amazed,
As the big sun glazed,
Over the clear, blue water.
Kids were laughing,
Waves were crashing,
And seagulls were chirping,
It was all very exciting.
I closed my eyes,
I could smell fresh, salty water.
I explored every bit of the rocks,
Covered in green moss
The rocks looked like large playing blocks,
And I touched the algae, like a boss.
I felt the cold, wet sand,
With my right hand,
I felt grounded and connected,
To this beautiful, Australian land.

‘The poem captures a sense of joy that lifts the spirit.’
Lotus Lantern
Dinethi Rose Perera, Wesley College

On Sunday, I was at a lantern competition,
I made a lantern that had Buddha on it,
My lantern was a lotus flower,
It was pink and it was beautiful,
But I didn’t get a prize for it and that is okay
Because it was still a wonderful day,
My lantern looked beautiful to me
Because I made it with my mummy and daddy.
My lantern had Prince Siddhartha in it
Standing on a lotus when he was born.
He was pointing upto the sky saying, “I will lead this World”.
When Ajahn Brahm looked at my lantern and at other children’s lanterns
I felt so happy and excited for everyone who got prizes,
I clapped and I smiled.
And my daddy took a photo of Ajahn Brahm, my lantern and I.
