Student Poetry Competition 2025 Finalist: A Poem of a Pencil

A Poem of a Pencil

by Anisha Bashal, Kardinia International College
Finalist, Years 5 – 6, written poetry

I’m grateful for my pencil
Shifting and drifting all around my paper,
Leaving an appealing design on my page,
Transforming a piece of paper into a pretty portrait,
Turning ideas of fiction into realism,
Supporting me to get my work done well in school,
Allowing me to express my feelings while drawing and writing –
Like how I am writing this poem.
Something so small and simple, particular and petite –
A blank, bland paper with the help of a pencil,
Can bring a beautiful picture to life.
Thank you pencil, for all you do.

‘A heartfelt tribute to a humble yet powerful tool.’
