A Sonnet for Gruoch
by Abbie Gargett, Donvale Christian College
Finalist, Years 11 – 12, written poetry
From Gille Coemaga’in of Moray, the first husband of Lady Gruoch Macbeth before his untimely death at the hands of Lord Macbeth
Shall I compare thee to a winter’s day?
Thou art more callous and more sinister
Rough winds do shake ’till one desires may,
To escape the cold thou administer s
Long gone is the sun of heaven that shone
Snuff’d out by the fame of thy endeavour
The sweet memory of an era gone
For now thy warmth hath left thee forever
Shall thy reigneth of winter e’er conclude?
Can thee loseth hold of thy beloved crown
Shall death freeze thy megalomanic mood?
Or will time serve only to bring thee down?
Thou actions show thou art no wife of mine
And the crown of Scotland shall ne’er be thine.
