Even through Saltwater, I’ll Still Ask
by Katia Alexopoulos, Methodist Ladies’ College (MLC)
Finalist, Years 9 – 10, written poetry
I’m thankful for the questions,
Not just the replies.
For the whats and hows,
And especially the whys.
Plain words that weave a fabric,
That forms the tapestries of our lives,
Help construct a quiet empire,
Of wonder kept in archives.
Where every thought is welcomed,
Though sometimes silence replies,
I don’t let that stop me
Because I know I can compromise.
Every time I catch my tears,
And on my fingers water smears,
Simple words of curiosity
Are here to soothe my fears.
If life were a farm,
Questions are the plough.
Nothing could be done,
Without asking now.
They break the ground of knowing,
They churn the stubborn soil,
Making room for wonder
To flourish among the toil.
And in the hardest moments,
I’ll hold on to my grasp,
Because even through saltwater,
I’ll still ask.
