Student Poetry Competition 2025 Finalist: Growth in our World

Growth in our World

by Reuben Dennis, Aitken College
Finalist, Years 7 – 8, written poetry

Listen to Reuben read his poem:

Just as a plant begins to grow
Some changes you will know
The seed will sprout
The top will come out
And its roots will reach below.

The fire starts small, barely an ember
Not near enough power to dismember
But with fuel and heat
Your eyes will be greet
With a blaze you will remember

The child is small, not more than a lad
In swaddling clothes he is clad
But as he studies and learns
And money he earns
He may become a dad.

Skills he will attain, in all aspects of life
From a wide array he can choose
Crocheting, archery
Music mastery
Inspired he may be from a muse

The foundation is laid
With parts of good grade
Sticks and stones
Bricks and bones
The building is finally made.

Let it be clear
How all things grow
Plants and trees
To curd and cheese
From all these things goodness flow!

‘A delightful and imaginative exploration of growth in its many forms, creative, personal and natural.’
