Student Poetry Competition 2025 Finalist: Hotham Magic

Hotham Magic

by Grace Mickelburough, Cathedral College Wangaratta
Finalist, Years 3 – 4, written poetry

My ankles roll side to side carving the snow and directing my slide.

My feet firmly fixed in my snug ski boots to protect my warmth from the cold underfoot.

My hands tingle as frosty air seeps into my gloves and snow flurries drift down from above.

I feel fast but steady, free like a bird, pulled downhill by gravity, my surroundings are blurred.

Weightless, swerving down the run to catch the last lift, that was fun.

β€˜An evocative poem that captures the exhilaration and sensory richness of skiing.’
