Student Poetry Competition 2025 Finalist: Pet Haiku

Pet Haiku

by Lyla Zoya Arain, Strathcona Baptist Girls Grammar School
Finalist, Years 3 – 4, written poetry

My cat’s fur is as
soft as clouds and as brown as
her name, Chocolate.

My cat’s soft, stripy
fur is as orange as peanut
butter. That’s Chili.

My dog loves humans,
other animals and you
too, I guess. -Falkor.

My fish says, “Blub,” to
you, me and everyone.
That’s Simba the fish.

Chocolate has a
cat brush and lots of toys that
she likes to play with.

Chili doesn’t have
any toys that he likes but
he kills prey. Like mice.

Simba the fish likes
food but since he’s a fish he
can’t have any toys.

Falkor has a toy
footy he likes to play with
that has bells inside.

‘A heart-warming and inventive tribute to beloved companions.’
