Student Poetry Competition 2025 Finalist: Whispering Tides

Whispering Tides

by Shloka Bhatt, Huntingtower
Finalist, Years 7 – 8, performance poetry

The sun rose above the horizon,
Waves crashed against the seashore,
Stars glimmer and fade,
The songs of birds fill my brain,
Trees dance with the wind
Voices fill the air,

Kids splashing in the water,
Parents lying on the sand,
Seagulls flying over picnics,
Trying hard to steal food we all know they never can,

Beach balls,
Frisbees,
Flying,
Kites’ high in the sky,
Surfers riding the waves,
A fun filled activity day.

Chitter Chattter,
All we can hear,
But there is only one thing we fear,

The winds picking up,
Water starts falling clouds cover the sun,
Waves roar and the oceans upset,
We rush to our cars,
The day just got too wet,

Now the suns hiding,
Waves colliding,
Rain pours down,
The cold takes over the town,

You can hear the rain drops from your car,
Drip,
Drop,
Drip,
Drop,

But somehow after only 10 mins
The storm went away,
Suddenly the calm returned to the day,

Now everyone’s running back out,
To the damp and wet sand,
This was NOT what we planned,

The sun peaks out rays of sunshine,
Peace has come back to the shore,
Just like it was before

Melbourne weather,
I mean what do should we expect,
All four seasons mixed in one day,
Our beloved beach trips,
Are never as we planned,
As Melbourne weather shifts and sways.

‘The performance captures the unpredictable charm of a day at the beach, especially under Melbourne’s erratic skies.’
