Student Poetry Competition 2025 Finalist: Whispers of Gratitude

Whispers of Gratitude

by Sophie Fowler, Wesley College Melbourne
Finalist, Years 5 – 6, written poetry

Series of haikus,
Brings peace to the heart and mind,
Nature soothes the soul.

A cold, dim moment,
Just a little further now,
There lays a bright light.

The moment of dawn,
Ablaze with pale golden flames,
It is morning now.

Green, sweeping grasses,
Are Iaden with dew and fog,
Quenching the land’s thirst.

Little flowers bloom,
Though unseen, they share their joy,
Gifts of happiness.

Cherry blossom tree,
Blooms such bright, pink and red hues,
In the sun-drenched Spring.

A weeping willow,
Droops down its weary branches,
To rest in the sun.

A bird flies freely,
In the ethereal sky,
With its head held up.

The crisp crimson leaves,
Fall from the golden heavens,
Blanketing the ground.

The cold, smooth water,
Cascades down the stone’s still face,
Wearing it away.

A strength of iron,
Will not bend perseverance,
For it has power.

Sun slowly sinking,
Soon lost to the calling earth,
Plunging into night.

The inky black sky,
Dripping with pearly moonlight,
Illuminating.

Small flickering flames,
Setting the split logs alight,
Warmth wraps round our home.

‘A graceful and evocative poem.’
