Music, Melody, Sound
by Claire Schroder, Woodleigh School
Winner, Years 5 – 6, performance poetry
As the sun cracks open,
stretching its rays up up up into the sky,
It opens a door to a wonderful day.
The kookaburras start laughing and chatting
The rivers begin to trickle with joy
And you start your daily life, Full of music.
The clash and clink of the breakfast bowls
As you pour your cereal
The zipping up of your bag
As you try to stuff…Everything…In
And the tip tapping of your shoes
As you run out the door.
Music, melody, sound.
As you walk to school you listen,
To the trees humming to you
The birds singing to you
And yourself humming to the natural music, Of your special world.
All day you notice yourself surround by this weird melody.
People chatting and giggling,
The scratching of the chalk on the cement,
And the brushing of the trees on the window of your classroom.
Music, melody, sound.
As you walk home, You see kids playing happily
On the big playground.
You hear the man
playing beautiful songs on his violin.
And the barking of the dog
As he runs after the colourful ball
Music, melody, sound
As you enter the door to your house
You hear your brother complaining about homework
Your sister dancing to Taylor Swift.
Somehow you mould those things into a melody.
And then you go to your room
And turn putting on the speaker.
You start listening to artists
Singing their songs.
Closing your eyes
The weight on your shoulders
Lifts!
Music, melody, sound
Your mood changes.
Smiles start appearing up your face.
You reflect and naturally
Go over your day and remember
the fun times you had.
From the time your friends invited you
To dance and have fun with them.
To having the amazing lunch
Mum and dad packed for you
You feel like a different, but awesome,
Person in this musical universe!
Music, it helps us in ways we don’t even realise.
It teaches us about the world.
It shows us that
Everyday can be a little different.
Everyday, as long as we listen,
There will be music for us all.
Music, melody, sound
