Student Poetry Competition 2026 Finalist: Fruit of Betrayal

Fruit of Betrayal

by Isaiah Carrick, Lysterfield Lake College
Years 5 – 6 Performance Poetry Finalist

The witch cackles,

The lightning strikes,

Snow white hits the floor,

The apple of the witch,

Supposed a sign of love,

Betrays the meaning,

Of friendship.

Good used for bad,

Like the fruits of the fall,

Judases shadow,

Darkening the conscience of

the witch, the evil one.

The squelch of mud,

Light peeking through the branches,

The glare of flashing steel

The time has come,

The messiah,

Swatted like a fly,

Meets his destiny.

The man,

Our saviour,

Betrayed, abandoned,

Left to tidy humanity’s troubles,

This man,

Who came to save us,

Treated with torment,

Put under the whip,

They see a demon in his face,

But the ones who do know see love.
