Student Poetry Competition 2026 Finalist: Joy is a River

Joy is a River

by Olivia Lee, Methodist Ladies’ College (MLC)
Years 5 – 6 Written Poetry Finalist

Joy is the thing that runs,

That keeps you up and going,

Little splashes of happiness,

Always forever flowing.

Something so pure and delicate,

Untainted wide – eyed delight,

Everyone hopes it is their fate,

Its bond eternally tight.

It dwells deep down,

Waiting for its time,

But when you uncover it,

You’ll know ‘this is mine’.

In their own words

How did writing this poem make you feel?

Writing this poem made me appreciate the emotion of joy more than before. I felt peaceful and calm as the piece showed what the delicate sort of joy is.

Describe your poem in three words

Serene, uplifting, tranquil.

I chose these words because I believe they describe the quiet, peaceful kind of joy that is demonstrated in the poem.

Where is your absolute favourite place to sit when you are brainstorming ideas?

To brainstorm ideas, I prefer to sit where I can face nature for inspiration and around my friends.

What skills do you think you strengthened through writing this poem?

I believe the skills I’ve strengthened are my expressive skills and the ability to describe an emotion. Another one is using literary devices such as personification which is probably the main one in my poem.

Why do you think people write poetry?

I believe people write poetry to express their feelings on paper in a song like way. Another reason could be that they need a creative outlet for when they are bored.
