by Cohen Penfold, Christian College Geelong
Years 3 – 4 Performance Poetry Finalist

Mango, Mango very nice and sweet

I hope you enjoy this delightful tropical treat

Mangoes are so sweet, golden, juicy and bright

They fill your mouth with a juicy burst of summer delight

Honey Gold, Pearl and Kensington Pride

Are just a few varieties of this fruit to try

Mango, mango so sweet, golden and delicious

With every bite, so nutritious

They bring the warm sunshine directly to you

Everyone wants one, so join the queue

So enjoy a piece of this ultimate golden treat

A flavour to enjoy all summer long that nothing can beat!

In their own words

How did writing this poem make you feel?

Happy, and I had lots of fun! Writing this poem on mangoes was fun, and energetic and gave me lots of happy vibes which I hope will pass on to people reading and listening to it.

Which single line in your poem are you the absolute proudest of?

‘A flavour to enjoy all summer long that nothing can beat!’

Describe your poem in three words

Summer, sweet, delicious.

Where is your absolute favourite place to sit when you are brainstorming ideas?

I enjoy sitting by the ocean, soaking in the atmosphere and the fresh air and observe to get ideas. However, for my Mango Magic Poem, I had a different experience. I danced around the kitchen table, finding a beat and rhythm.  As I moved, found a beat and clicked my fingers ideas flowed and sentences started to rhythm. I achieved a happy, upbeat, catchy poem describing my favourite fruit – delicious mangoes! It was lots of fun!

What skills do you think you strengthened through writing this poem?

Just thinking about memories and all the feelings that come in Summer when eating and enjoying a delicious mango.

Why do you think people write poetry?

So they can connect with other people and write down their thoughts and feelings.
