No-Spoon Stir
by Katia Alexopoulos, Methodist Ladies’ College (MLC)

The absence of a clean spoon
Curls around my empty fingers
Just as my right hand
Wobbling covertly with tremors
Tips the scalding milk over
Onto the chocolatey heap
I’ve trapped it
Suffocated it
Weighed it down under a thick ocean
It stays in its pocket, aching to be stirred
The drawer holds only knives, forks
For cutting, forking; nothing more
My heartbeat knocks along my forehead
Bursting with annoyance
At the thought of a curse
Laying my treat to rest instead
A stubby finger reaches out
Eager to resolve
Dips into lava
Comes out, and turns cold
I just watch the powder melt slowly
Reduced to a drop of viscosity
Sluggishly taking the form
Of my creamy enemy
