‘Still Life with Pear and Insects’ by Justus Juncker (1765)
Golden orange outsides
Snow white insides
Juicy flesh within
Who would throw in the bin
This delight of foods?
A fly, come through the window,
Flew low
To the golden pear
Thought it was rare,
And alighted to eat
The feast was near,
That was clear.
The fly calls for his friends,
And sends
For his mother
They floated down,
And brought a crown
To place on the first fly’s head
And said,
The marvellous new provider
They munched and mumbled
Their tummies never grumbled
Until, one day, it was gone
Later ‘ron
The Pear became a legend
Golden orange outsides
Snow white insides
Juicy flesh within
Who would throw in the bin
This delight of foods?
