Student Poetry Competition 2026 Finalist: The Snake

The Snake

by Zoe Ziyue Lin, Camberwell Girls Grammar School
Foundation – Year 2 Written Poetry Finalist

A snake is

a patterned line

that came alive.

No feet.

No legs.

Just swish…

swish…

swish…

Everyone else

has to walk.

It dances

across the ground.

In their own words

How did writing this poem make you feel?

I feel very happy because snakes are my favourite animal. My mum is scared of snakes, but I really like them. I wanted to show people why snakes are special. When I saw how a snake moves, it reminded me of dancing, and I love dancing too.

Which single line in your poem are you the absolute proudest of?

β€œIt dances across the ground.”
Because the snake loves dancing just like me. And this line makes me want to sing and dance too.

Describe your poem in three words

Snakeie, fun, creative.

Where is your absolute favourite place to sit when you are brainstorming ideas?

Under my bed, where I write my Super Secret Club notes.

Why do you think people write poetry?

I think people write poetry to share their ideas and feelings. It is a short way to write down what they see and imagine.
