Student Poetry Competition 2026 Finalist: Waxing Gibbous

Waxing Gibbous

by Isabella Zheng, Lauriston Girls School
Years 7 – 8 Written Poetry Finalist

Oh waxing gibbous,

How often does one gaze upon your light,

And think naught of your beauty,

But instead of what is yet to come.

Oh waxing gibbous,

How often does one talk about you,

As if you are not complete.

As if the dark side of you is not still a part of you,

As if the shadows make you less.

Oh waxing gibbous,

Think instead of how some will admire you for you.

Not what you could be,

Or who you would be if you were whole.

For waxing gibbous,

You do not need to be full,

Nor perfectly round.

Because even now,

You far outshine the stars.
